ADAMS AND MORAN AT DOUNE

It was honours even for Lee Adams and Scott Moran last weekend as they took a win apiece at Doune’s British Hillclimb counter and Adams (pictured) just failed to make it four wins in a row at his home venue. In the second run-off, the 2011 champion elect pipped the fleet GWR Raptor, which was running intermediate tyres all weekend in changeable conditions, for his eighteenth win of the year. Wallace Menzies chased home his Scots compatriot on a damp track in the opening shootout and followed the two leaders on his second, building his challenge to championship third place man Trevor Willis. He now lies just three points adrift of the OMS-Powertec driver going into the final two rounds at Loton Park this weekend.

As in June at the Scottish hill, Willis had a character-building weekend starting with a breakdown on the motorway on Friday afternoon. After his road car and trailer had been recovered to the venue, his opening run-off shot ended out of the points after a wild moment and a subsequent engine problem. He recovered to sixth place in the second stanza and while he still has an outside chance of catching Roger Moran for second overall at Loton this weekend unless Moran repeats his June form at his local hill, when Willis will need two good results to avoid losing third place on the table to the on-form Menzies.

British Championship standings after Doune: 1 Scott Moran 262pts; 2 Roger Moran 215; Trevor Willis 202; 4 Wallace Menzies 199; 5 Tom New 144; 6 Lee Adams 128; etc.

DJ ONE/TWO

As the weather fluctuated from drizzle to sunshine during the opening run-off at Prescott’s Gold Cup meeting, (Wallace Menzies (seen here with DJ Racecars’ Del Quigley – pic Rich Danby) took his third British hillclimb win in the DJ Firestorm. Making it a one/two for the Peak District-based company young Alex Summers, who had scored their first ever win at Shelsley Walsh in June before Menzies went on to make it a DJ double on the day, ran a strong second in his supercharged Firehawk. Harewood ace Richard Spedding kept up the bike engined challenge with third place in his Force-Hayabusa, but top qualifier Lee Adams slipped out of the points after a lurid moment at Ettores in his Raptor.

In dry run-off conditions in the afternoon, 2011 British champion elect Scott Moran set the day’s outright pace of 36.50 after qualifying top with a new class record. Over six tenths away, Menzies got closest while Adams recovered for a strong third place ahead of Roger Moran. On his last event in the Gould-Judd before a move back to the circuits with historic sports car racing, Chris Merrick bowed out in style by qualifying second, then trailed the leading quartet as the pace hotted up in the run-off.

After beating his class record in practice, Rob Stevens spun out in his self-developed supercharged Force-Hayabusa on his one chance to do it officially on a dry track on Sunday. But he’d already done enough during the year to win the prestigious Prescott Gold Cup, awarded annually for the best improvement over target times at the Cotswold hill.

British Championship standings: 1 Scott Moran 256; 2 Roger Moran 210; 3 Trevor Willis 197; 4 Wallace Menzies 182; 5 Tom New 131; 6 Chris Merrick 121; etc.

The end of Sprinting at St Eval

Cornish motorsport & in particular the Newquay Auto Club Ltd has received a major blow to the promotion of motorsport in Cornwall for 2012.

The NAC Ltd which was founded in 1914 and has promoted sprint racing at the Old Technical Site at St Eval Airfield for circa 45 years, has been advised by the Ministry of Defence that they are undertaking preliminary disposal actions within certain areas of St Eval, which includes the area used by the NAC Ltd. This means the facility will not be available for the NAC’s 2012 season.

The sprint events held at St Eval are the life line for the NAC Ltd and allows the Club to promote events such as the Classic Tour of Cornwall in aid of local charities.

The Club is determined to make their final event at St Eval on the 25th September 2011 a great success and are already actively seeking a new venue for the continued promotion of speed events in Cornwall.

MORAN TAKES THIRD TITLE

With two more wins at Gurston Down on Bank Holiday Sunday, Scott Moran (pic - John Hayward) secured his third British Hillclimb title with six rounds in hand. Despite just failing to match his 25.56 qualifier for the second run-off, which set FTD, broke the class record and lay just fourteen hundredths away from Martin Groves’ outright hill standard, Scott’s half-second margin over his father Roger in the final shoot-out clinched the title, with the dominant yellow Gould-NME once again speeding to a family one/two in each run-off.

Whether the same will apply to the overall Championship outcome will depend on Trevor Willis. His OMS-Powertec is traditionally outgunned by the bigger V8s on Gurston’s power slopes, particularly on the run to the finish, but Willis pulled out all the stops for a fine third place in the afternoon and with fewer scores to drop than current runner-up Moran Sr, will challenge hard for the series second place at the remaining events at Prescott, Doune and Loton Park.

Wallace Menzies’ two fourth places at Gurston kept the spectacular DJ Firestorm in a fairly safe fourth place on the table ahead of Tom New, while despite Lee Adams working wonders to get the tiny bike-engined Raptor in each of the two V8-dominated run-offs, a single point score saw the Scot just edged out of the Championship top six by Chris Merrick's Gould-Judd.

British Championship standings: 1 Scott Moran 252pts; 2 Roger Moran 202; 3 Trevor Willis 178; 4 Wallace Menzies 156; 5 Tom New 121; 6 Chris Merrick 112; etc.

TWO MORE FOR MORAN

On a day when class records tumbled, Shelsley Walsh’s hill record remained intact. Scott Moran’s (pictured) 23.31 FTD, set in qualifying for the second run-off, may have been threequarters of a second away from Martin Groves’ 2008 hill standard, but that didn’t stop him from adding two more run-off victories to his already impressive total as he continued his relentless progress towards a third British Hillclimb title.

Tom New maintained his recent run of form with two second places in the Gould-Judd, the first of them tying with Trevor Willis for second FTD. Amazingly, this was the third time since Harewood last month that Willis had tied for the runner-up spot in a British run-off. Still challenging hard for second overall on the championship table, the OMS driver’s deficit to Roger Moran is now just eleven points and with eight rounds still to run, dropped scores could prove crucial.

On a dry, warm day, Lee Adams did well to make the cut each time in the bike engined Raptor on the steep power slopes of Shelsley and even tied for seventh place with John Bradburn’s potent Gould V8 in the second shoot-out. But after his fine performance on the day, New elbowed past the Scot to take over fifth place on the championship table. However his next target, Wallace Menzies, is still 36 points clear after taking a fourth and a third at Shelsley in the spectacular DJ Firestorm.

British Championship standings: 1 Scott Moran 232pts; 2 Roger Moran 184; 3 Trevor Willis 173; 4 Wallace Menzies 149; 5 Tom New 113; 6 Lee Adams 109; etc.

Dyrham Park hillclimb cancelled
As most people will have heard by now the disappointing news is that the proposed return of Hillclimbing to Dyrham Park this October will now no longer happen.

Following a lot of hard work by the Bristol Motor Club the costs of installing safety barriers required to gain a track licence have proved to be too expensive and too great a financial risk to the Club.

The sport's hopes now look to Odiham and Blyton Park as possible long term new venues, albeit for Sprints.

THE LUCK OF THE IRISH

As if on a pre-arranged cue, drizzle closed in just before the end of each of the two British Hillclimb run-offs at the fast Craigantlet road course on the outskirts of Belfast. Last to run each time, top qualifier Scott Moran, the current series leader, was twice faced with a wet track and for the second time this season his father Roger (pictured),  took a double run-off win in their shared Gould-NME, this time on a dry track. The 1997 British champion closed the gap to his son on the championship table, but with a 40 point advantage, that third British title is still firmly in Scott’s sights.

Both Trevor Willis and Wallace Menzies, third and fourth in the series, took it in turns to qualify second fastest and thus fall foul of the deteriorating weather conditions, swapping second place finishes. Fifth on the table, Lee Adams flew on his first visit to Craigantlet and traded mid-field places with Will Hall in their bike-engined 1600s. The top five championship places remain unchanged, but with Tom New outpacing his co-driver Chris Merrick each time, the Gould-Judd pairing are now tied in sixth place on the championship table.

British Championship standings: 1 Scott Moran 212pts; 2 Roger Moran 172; 3 Trevor Willis 157; Wallace Menzies 134; Lee Adams 103; 5= Tom New and Chris Merrick 95; etc.

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

Bringing his 2011 win tally firmly into double figures, Scott Moran increased his British Hillclimb Championship lead over his father Roger to a healthy 46 points with a double win at Wiscombe Park. For the first time since the BHC’s twin run-off system was introduced in 1999, the order of the top seven finishers was identical in each run-off.

In second place each time, Wiscombe ace Trevor Willis closed in on Moran Sr on the championship table, despite a lurid moment at the Gate during the second run-off. Boosted by his win in Guernsey a fortnight earlier, Tom New scored two third places on the tight, tree-lined Devon hill and is on the verge of regaining a top six series placing, three points adrift of Gould-Judd co-driver Chris Merrick. Wallace Menzies maintained his championship challenge with fourth in each run-off. The bike-engined challenge was upheld by Scots compatriot Lee Adams, really flying on his first visit to the hill. After breaking the 1600 racing class record on consecutive runs, he took the Raptor to fifth place run-off finishes ahead of Roger Moran and Will Hall.

Championship standings: 1 Scott Moran 198pts; 2 Roger Moran 152; 3 Trevor Willis 141; 4 Wallace Menzies 117; 5 Lee Adams 96; 6 Chris Merrick 85; etc.

GUERNSEY TOM
With another win at the opening Le Val des Terres British Hillclimb run-off in Guernsey, Scott Moran continued on his relentless way towards a third title. But the sensation of the day was Tom New’s victory on a drying track in the closing shootout. The Southampton-based driver (pictured) was delighted with a second career win, his first having come back in 2004, driving his V6 Pilbeam-Rover K at Gurston Down. More poignantly, although his co-driver Chris Merrick twice tied for first place with Scott Moran last year, it was in that same car, at that same Guernsey event nine years ago, that the legendary Roy Lane took his last ever victory.
On a roll after his Bouley Bay win two days earlier, Wallace Menzies continued to rack up strong championship points with second place each time ahead of Roger Moran. The Scot closed the gap behind Trevor Willis, whose fourth place in the morning was his only score after spinning the OMS out of the second shoot-out just after Terres House. His earlier finishing position was taken by local man Darren Warwick, who scored his first British points in the ex.Haimes Dallara-Vauxhall.

British Championship standings after Le Val des Terres: 1 Scott Moran 178pts; 2 Roger Moran 142; 3 Trevor Willis 123; 4 Wallace Menzies 103; 5 Lee Adams 84; 6 Chris Merrick 82; etc.

ANOTHER WIN FOR MENZIES

Scott Moran set the outright pace with a 38.35 sec opening run-off win at Bouley Bay, the opening leg of the British Hillclimb Championship’s annual Channel Islands trip. He extended his series lead by a single point over his father Roger, despite only finishing fifth to Roger’s fourth place in the afternoon shoot-out.

Most consistent runner on the day was Bouley record-holder Trevor Willis. Runner-up each time, for the second time in consecutive British events the OMS 25 driver tied for the placing in the afternoon shoot-out, this time with Will Hall. But it was Wallace Menzies (pictured) that grabbed a narrow five hundredths advantage over Willis to take the afternoon win, the second of his career in the DJ Firestorm.

With Lee Adams not making the long trip from Aberdeen, Menzies took over fourth place on the championship table by a single point from his Scots compatriot and now looks set to extend his advantage when the circus moves to Guernsey’s tortuous Le Val des Terres road course on Saturday.

Championship standings after Bouley Bay: 1 Scott Moran 162pts; 2 Roger Moran 126; 3 Trevor Willis 116; 4 Wallace Menzies 85; 5 Lee Adams 84; 6 Chris Merrick 82; etc.

BARC TO RUN BRITISH HILLCLIMBS IN 2011

The Motor Sports Association has appointed the British Automobile Racing Club as the promoter of the MSA British Hill Climb Championship and Hill Climb Leaders Championship for a period of five years from 1 January 2012.

The appointment follows an open tender process that was launched by the MSA earlier this year. BARC will take over from Speed Championships Ltd, which has run both Hill Climb championships successfully for many years.

BARC Chief Executive, Dennis Carter, said: ‘We are delighted to have been given this opportunity. We have been involved in hill climbing for more years than I can imagine, and of course operated the hill climbs at Gurston Down and Harewood Hill.

‘When Tony Fletcher first suggested that we should apply to run the championships when he decided to retire we were flattered to say the least; Tony has done a great job in keeping the championships strong and healthy and will be a hard act to follow.’

MSA General Secretary Rob Jones said: ‘The MSA was delighted by BARC’s interest and we are confident that the championships will flourish under fresh management. We must thank Speed Championships’ Tony Fletcher for his great contribution to the championships’ ongoing success, and would like it noted that he has been involved in their organisation for over 50 years.’

MORAN IN ALL-TIME TOP THREE

For the first time since Gurston Down at the end of May, Scott Moran was back on the winner’s rostrum with two straight wins at Harewood’s British hillclimb meeting last weekend. Setting FTD in the afternoon run-off, he pulled out a half-second margin over day-long rivals Trevor Willis and Roger Moran as they tied for the runner-up spot on a hot day when elevated tyre temperatures were causing problems for many competitors.

But in the morning run-off, after Willis had stolen a narrow edge over Moran Sr for second place, Scott’s victory margin of two tenths had been enough to book a top place in the lineup of hillclimb greats as he became the third most successful driver in the history of the Championship. He finally overtook 5-times champion Martyn Griffiths’ total of 67 run-off wins and of the 87 drivers that have won British hillclimb rounds since 1947, only Roy Lane (90 wins) and Martin Groves (104) have exceeded Scott Moran’s current total of 69.

TWO MORE FOR ADAMS

At the third wet British Hillclimb meeting in as many weekends, a stunning performance on his home hill by Lee Adams (pic – Jerry Sturman) defeated a strong V8 challenge, taking both run-off victories at Doune ahead of Scott Moran. Now with three wins on his slate, the driver of Graeme Wight Jr’s bike engined GWR Raptor becomes 2011’s second most prolific round winner so far. Championship leader Moran has six and despite not having won a round since Gurston in May, with a string of second place finishes he retains a comfortable series lead. Wallace Menzies upheld local honour with the screaming DJ Firestorm V8 to chase home Trevor Willis for fourth place before lunch. Then when Willis’s OMS-Powertec clipped a wall and punctured a tyre in the second run-off, Menzies took over third place. It had been a character-building weekend for Willis, who had wiped off two corners at virtually the same spot during Saturday practice and, with the aid of OMS constructor Steve Owen, repaired the car for Sunday’s event.

HOLMES AND CALDER TAKE THE HONOURS AT ANGLESEY
Terry Holmes (Lola Judd T90/50) and Colin Calder (Gould Judd GR37) took the Top 12 run off spots in the British Sprint Championship rounds 9 and 10 on two very different days at Anglesey.

The Saturday was dry and saw Holmes take his first run off victory of they ear over championship leader Stewart Robb. Sunday's event on the National circuit was very wet and saw Calder take the vistory by over three seconds from Robb, again in runner up spot.

ROGER AND OUT
Roger Moran dominated the British Championship run-offs at a streaming wet Loton Park with two superlative wins and FTD  last weekend. Even double British champion Scott Moran couldn’t get within a second of his father’s times as they splashed to a family double twice during the day. With Scott’s 2011 championship rival Trevor Willis failing to score after spinning out of qualifying in the morning and again missing the cut in the afternoon, the two wins moved Roger (pic - Jerry Sturman) up into second overall on the championship table behind Scott. Another former rallyman, Eynon Price, revelled in the conditions with third place each time in his 1600c Force, while Mike Manning’s 4WD rallycross Puma underlined its status as the most successful saloon car in the history of the British championship with best ever fourth and fifth place finishes.

Robb double at sunny Pembrey
Stewart Robb (Pilbeam MP88) took a couple of dominant Top 12 Run Off top spots at a hot and dry Pembrey on June 4/5 for the BARC Wales Summer Sprint week-end.

It certainly felt like summer with clear blue skies and hot conditions on the Saturday and despite the rest of the country (and not just  Wales!) experiencing rain on the Sunday the Pembrey circuit stayed warm and dry.

Notable performances included a Top 12 4th and 2nd by Ross Napier,  a 6th and 7th from Steve Miles and an 8th from Kevin Lealen (pictured in the ex Dave Mills Pilbeam MP62) on the Sunday having had a suspension failure on the Saturday and a trailer blow out on the M4 while returning with the repaired car! There were also plenty of exciting battles in other classes which included competitors from the HSA, Westfield and TVR championships.

DJ Double
Champagne flowed in the DJ Racecar pit at Shelsley Walsh on Sunday as the Derbyshire-based team celebrated their maiden British Hillclimb success after not one, but two run-off wins!
After giving notice of intention at Gurston Down the previous weekend, when he had chased home Scott Moran each time at Gurston in the the 3.2-litre DJ Firestorm-Cosworth XD, Wallace Menzies scored his first British hillclimb victory with FTD in Shelsley's closing run-off ahead of championship leaders Trevor Willis and Scott Moran. But the very first win for Del Quigley and Andy Smith’s DJ team had already come in the opening run-off when, after Dave Uren had set the top qualifying time in his 1100cc Force during rapidly deteriorating track conditions, Alex Summers (pic – Jerry Sturman), despite the presence of six V8s and a host of ultra-competitive 1600cc cars, stormed through from third Q-spot on slick tyres, when many had switched to wets, to score his own first win and the first for the DJ team, leading home Scott and Roger Moran in his 1.4-litre supercharged Firehawk-Hayabusa.

Stohr Stars at The Palace
Following their success last year 7Oaks Motor Club repeated their sprint weekend at Crystal Palace on the 29th and 30th of May. Once again conditions were dry and warm and several HSA members were present, the HSA being one of the invited clubs.

In front of large crowd on both days the Stohr DSR was the car to beat, BTD on both days, Sunday and John Hewatt on 35.47sec, Monday and Mike Field in the seat on 35.85sec, slightly slower than 2010 although the finish line was closer to North Tower for safety reasons with the start line repositioned accordingly.

Large crowds of spectators were present on both days and the Mayor of Bromley presented the prizes on Monday, the cooperation of Bromley vital to the continued success of this venue. It will certainly be happening again in 2012 so make a note in your diary

Speedscene Editor
We are sad to announce that Martin Price has resigned as Speedscene Editor. The demands of producing a magazine like Speedscene, taken together with other personal reasons have led to this decision. In the four years than Martin has been editor he has put a lot of effort into Speedscene and seen the magazine develop into the modern, full colour publication we have to-day. He departs with our thanks.

In the short term we intend to continue with a small editorial team continuing to work with the publishers to produce each issue. Jerry Sturman will stand in as Acting Editor until we have appointed a new editor who will be announced in due course.

Graves takes the win at Wiscombe

Launceston’s Terry Graves, in his immaculate Gould GR37, took Fastest Time of the Day on Saturday at Wiscombe Park with an electrifying first run of 37.72 seconds, a victory which compensated for his narrow defeat at the hands of Newton Abbot’s Tony Wiltshire at last year’s event.  And, just like Wiltshire in 2010, his first run was never beaten, despite the best efforts of fellow-class runners John Forsyth/Andrew Forsyth, and Rodney Thorne/Colin Pook, both sharing 3.5 litre Pilbeam MP58 machines. The real threat to Graves, however, came from the winner of the up-to-1600cc class, Saltash resident Mike Lee, who also had a stunning first run to stop the clock on 37.94 seconds, only just over 2/10ths adrift of the eventual winner.  Despite giving away almost 2 litres in engine capacity, Lee’s first time was over a tenth faster than Graves’ second run but as both were slower at the second time of asking the winner was settled by mid-afternoon.  In the 1100cc racing car category, Honiton’s Dave Gardner propelled his 998 cc Empire 001 to a time of 40.31 and then bettered that with a sub-40 second run in 39.68 seconds to take the class win.

Sponsored by the local partnership of The Tipton Garage and Alansway Body Repairs, Torbay Motor Club’s Wiscombe event was again held in dry, bright and mostly sunny conditions, although cooler conditions later in the afternoon contributed to no fewer than nine classes being decided by the first timed runs.

Other Torbay Motor Club members to take home class awards were Westward Ho! resident Andy Cawsey (2nd in B3), Ian Yeo from Willand (2nd in C4) and Whimple’s Ben Stephenson (2nd in E1).

12 contenders in the TVR Sports Car Club speed championship battled hard all day, the winner’s spoils eventually going to Frome’s Mark Everett (TVR Chimaera) on handicap with a time of 47.51.

HSA RETURN TO WERRINGTON

Having last visited Werrington in 2008 the REIS/HSA Speed Championship returned to this country estate north of Launceston for their May Bank Holiday hillclimb. Ably run for many years by Plymouth Motor Club the hill was partially relaid in 2010 and record times were in the offing. Mixed weather conditions affected both days, in particular racing car times on Saturday when Mike Lee took BTD in his 1600cc OMS on 35.23sec. Sunday and it was business as usual with Terry Graves dry climb of 33.29sec in his Gould GR37 securing not only BTD but a new hill record. HSA contenders were in the honours too, Garen Gumbley (Force PT) and John Burton (Ralt RT3) both 1st in their classes on Sunday, in the 36's. Other HSA contenders were also on the pace with no fewer than 7 new HSA class records and high points scoring.

Round 1 of the REIS/HSA Speed Championship

The 16th of April 2011 and the first round of the REIS/HSA Speed Championship at Gurston Down. The weather was unseasonably warm and the dry track produced good driving conditions, so much so that Matt Hillam set a new hill record for class C on 31.90seconds.

All the times can be seen at:

The day was also enlivened with filming for Fifth Gear, Tiff Needell showing excellent form in the V8 Ariel Atom and also interested in Mike Broome’s Eldon Formula Ford, one of which he owned following his introduction to motor sport in a Lotus 51 which he won in an Autosport competition.

Paul Parker becomes new President of the HSA

After serving on the HSA committee for many years in a number of roles including Championship co-ordinator and Chairman. Paul Richardson has decided to step down as President of the association. I am sure that all of you who know Paul will join me in thanking him for his significant contribution and wish him well for the future, which, incidentally should see him and his Clan Crusader make a re-appearance on the tracks very soon.

As one chapter closes another opens, as they say, and I am delighted to welcome Paul Parker (pictured) as the new President of the HSA. Many of you will know him either through his regular column in Speedscene magazine, as co-ordinator of the British Sprint Championship, as a Clerk of the Course or as an HSA committee member a few years ago. Paul’s extensive knowledge of the sport and wide range of contacts will be of enormous help in shaping the future direction of the association and we look forward to his contribution.

Revival of hillclimbing at Dyrham Park moves closer
The possibility of hillclimbing returning to the National Trust property of Dyrham park, on the A46 just north of Bath and close to J18 of the M4 is looking more likely.

The Bristol Motor Club , referring to a recent announcement, say:

"In it I report on a meeting we had with the National Trust to discuss the proposed revival of the hillclimb at Dyrham Park. I described the mood of the meeting as positive, but I didn't realise just how positive: a few days later I had a phone call from the Operations Manager to let me know that the Trust has agreed to foot the bill for resurfacing the damaged part of the drive, and confirming the event in our calendar on the agreed date, 2nd October 2011! We have another meeting next week to agree the precise terms, but I am confident that we will reach agreement, such is the enthusiasm shown by the local National Trust people."

This is excellent news and all credit to those at the Bristol Motor Club for their efforts.

The accompanying photo is taken looking down at the penultimate corner on the hill, a little like the Esses at Prescott, which leads up to the final corner, coincidentally not unlike Semi Circle.

More Dyrham photos to appear on this site shortly.

BRITISH HILLCLIMB AWARDS

The top 2010 contenders are pictured after the annual British Hillclimb Championship awards ceremony at Droitwich’s Chateau Impney. British Champion Martin Groves is flanked by runner-up Scott Moran (right) and third man Trevor Willis. Left to right behind them are Chris Merrick (5th), Tom New (7th), Will Hall (10th), Wallace Menzies (8th), Paul Ranson (6th) and Roger Moran (4th). The only absentee is Deryk Young (9th), who was in America.

Groves also took the Raymond Mays Trophy for the lowest total time of the best runs at BHC Prescott and Shelsley meetings, while Midland Hillclimb Champion Will Hall added the Shell Racing Solutions Leaders Championship title and the trophy awarded by British Championship sponsor Nicholson McLaren for outstanding performance to his tally of 2010 awards.

The coveted Norrie Galbraith Memorial Trophy, first awarded in 1983 by the HSA and now recognized as one of the foremost awards in British Hillclimbing, goes to the best organized British Hillclimb round of the year. For a record seventh time Lothian Car Club took the award, for their June Doune round in 2010. Pictured are Clerk of the Course Vernon Williamson (left) and Secretary of the Meeting Billy Cater, with Nicholson McLaren’s John Waghorn.

Groves bows out with a narrow win
After Martin Groves had qualified top for the opening run-off with a new class record at Loton Park’s British hillclimb finale, Scott Moran took the win from his perennial rival with a time that would stand as FTD. But in a fittingly close duel in the final shoot-out of the season, an exact repeat of his earlier time by 2010 champion Groves was enough to snatch the win from his perennial rival by just one hundredth of a second on the very last British Championship run of the year. At the Loton prize presentation, Groves (pictured) announced that he would not be defending his title in 2011 and that the Gould-NME that he and Paul Ranson had campaigned for the last six years was for sale. Their 55B is the most successful car in British hillclimbing, having taken Groves to four Championship titles and a record 104 run-off wins.
Despite close competition on a cold day the top nine championship positions remained unchanged, but the duel for tenth spot on the Championship table between Will Hall and Eynon Price came down to a nail-biting head-to-head in the final run-off of the year. Having secured the 1600 racing class win and with it the Leaders and Midland Hillclimb Championship title double, Hall snatched the coveted ‘Number 10’ by a single point after outrunning his long-term adversary by a tenth of a second.

2010 Nicholson McLaren MSA British Hillclimb Championship, final positions: 1 Martin Groves 247pts; 2 Scott Moran 238; 3 Trevor Willis 203; 4 Roger Moran 182; 5 Chris Merrick 141; 6 Paul Ranson 137; 7 Tom New 112; 8 Wallace Menzies 72; 9 Deryk Young 62; 10 Will Hall 57; etc.

Groves maket it four!
With FTD and his 103rd run-off win, Martin Groves (pictured) matched the achievements of the legendary Roy Lane and Ken Wharton as he sealed his fourth British Hillclimb title at a damp and slippery Doune on Sunday. After Scott Moran had beaten his season-long rival by just four hundredths to win the opening run-off, Groves dug deep in the final shoot-out, turning the tables on the defending champion by over half a second to leave him an impossible target for next weekend’s Loton Park Championship finale. Third FTD, Trevor Willis duelled all day with Groves’ driving partner Paul Ranson and finally got the upper hand, but Ranson broke clear of his tie with Tom New to take sole charge of sixth place on the series table.
Scots 1600cc star Lee Adams, who had outqualified all but Groves in the morning with Graeme Wight Jr’s Raptor-Suzuki, got in amongst the big V8s each time on his home hill. Will Hall chased Adams hard during the class runs and qualified the Force-Suzuki twice, but his bid to match absent rival Eynon Price’s championship points tally fell short by a single point and their duel for the coveted ‘number 10’ is set to go down to the wire at Loton.

British Championship positions: 1 Martin Groves 242pts; 2 Scott Moran 229; 3 Trevor Willis 194; 4 Roger Moran 181; 5 Chris Merrick 132; 6 Paul Ranson 122; etc.

The Price is right!
Eynon Price (pictured) made history at Prescott on Sunday as the first driver to win a British Hillclimb run-off in a motorcycle engined car for 48 years. The delighted former rallyman slithered his Force-Hayabusa to his first ever run-off victory on a wet track in the opening run-off to beat even venue ace Trevor Willis, with Rob Turnbull and championship leader Martin Groves rounding off the top four.
For the second run-off, conditions were the best of the day though still wet in places. Willis’s nimble OMS-Powertec made sure of the win this time, from Groves, with a decisive 40.25 FTD. On a day when bike-engined single seaters made the most of the slippery conditions, 1600cc racing class winner Richard Spedding took third place and third FTD ahead of Turnbull, as the veteran hillclimber scored his best combined result for six years.
Amazingly, an off-form Scott Moran failed to qualify for either run-off, his resulting no-score leaving Groves with a healthy 20 point lead over his long-time rival. Willis’s return to form saw the Aylesbury driver move back up to third place in the championship which, with four rounds to run, moves to the penultimate event at Doune in a fortnight.

British Championship positions: 1 Martin Groves 230pts; 2 Scott Moran 210; 3 Trevor Willis 182; 4 Roger Moran 178; 5 Chris Merrick 129; 6= Tom New and Paul Ranson 108; etc.

Honours even at Gurston
With Martin Groves and Scott Moran each taking a win and second place at the August Bank Holiday Gurston Down meeting, the event at which Moran had secured his British Hillclimb title in 2008 and 2009, Groves’ slender four point lead in this year’s championship was maintained at four points. With just six rounds remaining, their duel for this year’s crown could go to the final rounds at Loton Park in a month’s time. But in the class-based Hillclimb Leaders’ series, Will Hall (pictured) took yet another win in the 1600cc racing division and secured the 2010 title from Moran with three rounds in hand. The Romsley-based driver now sits on a possible hat-trick of titles, as he also leads the Prescott Gold Cup (decided at Prescott next weekend) and the UK Changes Midland Hillclimb Championship, with rounds remaining at Prescott and Loton Park.
The Gurston event was a round of the Richard Egger HSA Speed series but it was not a good day for leading contenders Simon Andrews and Bernard Kevill, whose MG TF was forced to retire with gear linkage problems before the competition runs. The early leader of the HSA’s B’ Licence saloon and sports divison, Eric Morrey, whose turbocharged Clan lies third in the series, conceded victory on the second runs to Neil Duncanson’s Audi Quattro. Among the ‘A’ licence runners, a spirited performance by Robert Way took top honours in the 600cc racing division, Andy Dunbar turned the tables on Gurston expert Terry Luff in a Westfield duel and Fyrth Crosse, after a shaky opener, bounced back to take the Historic class win in his Ensign in a well supported Historic car class.
Full report in a forthcoming Speedscene.

British Championship positions: 1 Martin Groves, 214pts; 2 Scott Moran 210; 3 Roger Moran 171; 4 Trevor Willis 159; 5 Chris Merrick 126; 6 Tom New 108; etc.

Merrick & Moran - Again

In an astonishing replay of their May Gurston duel, Chris Merrick and Scott Moran (pictured) again tied for the win in a British Hillclimb run-off, this time at Shelsley Walsh. Each time in his two-win career and within the space of three months, Merrick has had to share victory with Moran, but it was the defending champion’s 57th win, which puts him within striking distance of five-time British champion David Grace’s fourth place overall on the all-time run-off winners’ table. Craigantlet victor Paul Ranson finished a strong third ahead of co-driver Martin Groves in an ill-handling Gould, which gave both drivers heart-stopping moments through Crossing at 130mph.

Merrick’s co-driver Tom New looked set to win the second shoot-out after a blistering attack deep into the 23s but in a typically determined closing shot, championship leader Groves pulled out all the stops to snatch FTD from New by six hundredths, securing his eleventh win of the year and ending the day four points clear of rival Moran.
Once again the 1600cc racing cars provided the best class action of the day, Leaders series front-runner Will Hall withstanding an attack from first arch-rival Eynon Price and then flying Scot Lee Adams, who barrelled the GWR Raptor through to ease early challenger Nigel Morris back to fourth in the DJ Firehawk.
            Full report follows in Speedscene.

British Championship standings: 1 Martin Groves 195pts; 2 Scott Moran 191; 3 Roger Moran 162; 4 Trevor Willis 156; 5 Chris Merrick 111; 6 Paul Ranson 94; etc.

ROY LANE

In what has been a desperately sad week for hillclimbing, we are sorry to announce that Roy Lane has finally succumbed to the illness from which he had suffered for several years now. A true hillclimb legend, there is insufficient space here to do justice to Roy’s achievements in a British Hillclimb career that thrived for over three decades, but in sending condolences to his family, friends and fellow competitors, we are certain that the memory of this popular, dedicated and innovative engineer will survive as long as the sport he loved so much continues to flourish.
An in-depth tribute to Roy will be published in a future edition of Speedscene.

BOB DAYSON

We are sorry to report that Bob Dayson finally lost his battle with cancer in the early hours of this morning. The ever jovial arch-enthusiast for motorsport, particularly hillclimbing and sporting trials, will long be remembered for his light-hearted but always competitive approach to the sport to which he contributed so much, in so many ways. The HSA would like to offer sincere condolences to Bob’s family and countless friends. One of hillclimbing’s true characters, he will be much missed.

A full appreciation will follow in a future issue of Speedscene

HENSON’S WIN – GALLAGHER’S TITLE

As the only sub-30sec runner of the day, Andrew Henson set the outright pace at Curborough’s Richard Egger HSA Speed Championship finale in his Ralt-Rover, edging out first run spinner Jim Yardley. A sudden rain shower caught out the veteran Beagle-Honda driver midway through the first runs and put pressure on many of the single seater drivers, including Brian Ball. The 600cc Force-Yamaha driver also spun on his first run and although he recovered later, he failed to catch class winner Robert Way’s Jedi and, crucially, Championship second place man Simon Andrews, who had led Ball by a single point going into the last round. As Andrews and Steve Filkin swapped records in a duel for class C2 honours, the MG Cup TF driver scored a narrow win over Filkin’s Elise to confirm his Championship runner-up placing ahead of Ball.
John Gallagher (pictured earlier this year at Harewood) was also on class-winning record form in his Mazda MX5, confirming the 2009 Richard Egger HSA title that he’d already secured by the preceding round at Shelsley.

After a fine opening shot by Peter Kukainis in his Westfield-Duratec had got right in amongst the single seaters to secure third FTD, Elden FF driver Mike Broome won one of the closest fought Alan Payne Trophy class winners’ run-offs ever seen with the top three; Broome, Ben Hamer’s Mini Turbo and Clive Wooster’s Radical, covered by just seven hundredths of a second on corrected times.

Full report in Speedscene 156.

Provisional final championship positions: 1 John Gallagher (1.8 Mazda MX5); 2 Simon Andrews (1.8 MG TF); 3 Brian Ball (0.6 Force-Yamaha); 4 Steve Filkin (1.8 Lotus Elise); 5 Geoff Kershaw (2.9 Ford Sierra); etc.

AMBITION FULFILLED

‘I’ve always wanted to win here,’ said Trevor Willis after taking FTD at the daunting Carse of Cambus hillclimb at Doune. With it came victory by two hundredths of a second over British champion Scott Moran in the final MCL Motorhomes British Hillclimb run-off of the year. Despite gearshift problems demanding second gear starts, Scott and father Roger opened the day’s run-off action with another family one/two after Willis had skated straight on at the notorious East Brae in qualifying. But later in the day, backed up in the OMS-Powertec by constructor Steve Owen (in the points on his first outing in the car), Willis scored his sixth win of the year – and the tenth of his career – to underline his status as 2009 championship runner-up.
With a blinding sub-record shot in the second run-off, four-times Scottish champion Jonathan Rarity chased home the two leaders to head Moran Sr, but not before he’d seen his 1600 racing class record officially broken by the flying Will Hall. With top six finishes each time, Hall finished the year in a fine eighth place on the British series table, but even a class win at record pace was not enough to prevent rival Paul Haimes winning the Hillclimb Leaders Championship for the second time. A class win for Haimes – who also steered the Dallara to a 2009 best third place in the opening shoot-out – was enough to do the trick for the F1 Racing Fuel series’ title.

With Eynon Price also in the points each time and finishing tenth overall on the British table, 1600cc cars figured well in both run-offs. Lee Adams made a great British Championship debut in the new Graeme Wight Jr built GWR Raptor-Hayabusa (pictured), opening his account straight away with sixth place in the opening run-off before an oil leak stemmed the superb new machine’s progress.

Final British Championship positions: 1 Scott Moran 246pts; 2 Trevor Willis 219; 3 Roger Moran 202; 4 Martin Groves 184; 5 Chris Merrick 134; 6 Paul Ranson 113; 7 Tom New 87; 8 Will Hall 83; 9 Deryk Young 80; 10 Eynon Price 75; 11 Paul Haimes 66; 12 Rob Turnbull 45; etc.

27/09/2009

TWO MORE FOR TREVOR

Trevor Willis (pictured) clocked up his fifth win of the year with two successive British run-off victories at Prescott on Sunday. With 2009 champion elect Scott Moran failing to score following a series of gear selection problems, his closest challenger on the Championship table was uncatchable, setting two identical run-off times for FTD.
After an uncharacteristic spin at SemiCircle during the opening run-off, Roger Moran bounced back to chase Willis home in the second shoot-out with a second gear start, the paddle-shift change from first to second having already blunted son Scott’s earlier challenge. Rob Turnbull continued his late season form with second and third places chased first by Deryk Young and then Will Hall. The expected battle raged between Hall and Eynon Price in their Force-Hayabusas, with each bagging successive fourth places after Price had qualified in the afternoon with a new 1600 class record – which was promptly (although unofficially) lowered by Hall during the second shoot-out! In another superb performance in the ‘budget’ 1000cc Martlet-Suzuki, Adam Steel qualified for the opening run-off by demolishing Adam Fleetwood’s long-standing 1100 class record, however a paddle-shift fumble kept him down the order with points at stake.

British Championship positions after Prescott: 1 Scott Moran 230pts; 2 Trevor Willis 214; 3 Roger Moran 194; 4 Martin Groves 184; 5 Chris Merrick 134; 6 Paul Ranson 113; 7 Tom New 87; 8 Deryk Young 80; 9 Will Hall 72; 10 Eynon Price 71; etc.

TWO IN A ROW FOR SCOTT

Scott Moran (pictured) secured his second consecutive British Hillclimb Championship title at Gurston Down on August Bank Holiday Sunday.
But on a day when wet weather turned the form book on its ear, neither series leader Moran nor his closest rival, Trevor Willis, qualified for the opening run-off, when a delighted Rob Turnbull took his first British win for over six years ahead of the consistently rapid Roger Moran. Peter Marsh took a superb third place in the V6 Gould on his first ever British run-off appearance, while James Blackmore’s bike-engined OMS, 2-litre class winner Chris Guille and new 1600 racing class record-holder Will Hall rounded out an eclectic top six.
Following a spin during qualifying for the opening run-off, Willis finally came good with a magnificent drive in the closing shoot-out to take his third win of the year in the OMS-Powertec by over a second. Once again the ultra-dependable Roger Moran grabbed second place, leapfrogging the absent Martin Groves to move into third place on the series table.  But by that stage, he knew that son Scott needed only a mid-field finish to be sure of a second British title. He was already assured of that by the time Roger took the penultimate run and despite a one/two by Willis and Moran Sr, Scott’s sixth place at the end was enough to clinch a well-deserved second British title.

British Championship positions after Gurston Down: 1 Scott Moran 230pts; 2 Trevor Willis 194; 3 Roger Moran 188; 4 Martin Groves 184; 5 Chris Merrick 134; 6 Paul Ranson 113; 7 Tom New 87; 8 Deryk Young 66; 9 Will Hall 65; 10 Eynon Price 62; etc.

MORANS’ CLEAN SWEEP

Scott Moran (pictured) took a step nearer an almost inevitable second successive British title after taking both run-off wins at Shelsley Walsh. The result moved his 2009 win tally to 13 and his points lead to 41 with just six rounds to go. In a clean sweep for the Moran family, his father Roger finished second each time ahead of an on-the-limit Trevor Willis and Shelsley expert Deryk Young. With his two third places, Willis leveled his Championship score with the absent Martin Groves, who had already announced his withdrawal from the series.

In what has been something of a ‘comeback year’, Moran Sr looks set to overhaul Groves on the Championship table as increases his lead over Chris Merrick. Summer sunshine brought big crowds to Shelsley, most of whom were rooting for Merrick to score his first ever British win after he’d qualified top for the opening run-off. But as co-driver Tom New neared the finish line on his opening run-off shot, the Gould’s Judd unit went off-song. New finished a strong fifth, but a broken valve spring sidelined the car before Merrick had a chance to run.

Driving his Pilbeam-Judd, Oliver Tomlin enjoyed his finest British Championship day so far with sixth and later fifth place, while the impressive Simon Marsh made the cut each time aboard his late father Tony’s Gould V6, getting his first ever British points on the board with ninth place in the afternoon.

British Championship positions after Shelsley Walsh: 1 Scott Moran 225pts; 2= Martin Groves and Trevor Willis 184; 4 Roger Moran 170; 5 Chris Merrick 134; 6 Paul Ranson 113; 7 Tom New 87; 8 Deryk Young 63; 9 Eynon Price 62; 10 Will Hall 53; etc.

FINTRAY HILL RECORD FALLS AFTER 20 YEARS

Stewart Robb Jr finally broke Roy Lane’s long standing 25.72 hill record at Grampian MC’s short, 725 yard hill at Fintray, near Aberdeen, last Saturday. Lane’s old hill standard was set at 1989’s British Championship meeting in his Pilbeam-DFL MP58. Robb’s father, Stewart Sr, was first inside the record – by a mere hundredth – aboard their 4-litre Pilbeam-Judd MP88. But on a day when nine class records were reset, his son applied the coupe de gras on the very last run of the day with a 25.28.

The traditional large sign at Ruin, which displays the current hill record and its holder, was updated and in place by the start of practice for Sunday’s event!

WILLIS STARS, BUT MORAN EXTENDS HIS LEAD AS GROVES NON-STARTS IN ULSTER
In a day-long duel with Scott Moran, Trevor Willis won his second British round in as many weekends with a superb closing run-off shot at Northern Ireland’s historic Craigantlet hillclimb. Despite Willis's considerable horsepower disadvantage on the upper reaches of the fast Ulster road course, devastating pace on the tighter early section gave him the win from Moran as closed to within four hundredths of Scott’s FTD.
On a day punctuated by brief spells of intermittent drizzle, Moran set the outright pace in winning the opening shoot-out from Willis. Martin Groves never entered the equation as for the second successive year at Craigantlet his Gould was sidelined during practice, this time with engine problems. With Groves out, Moran stretched his championship lead to a healthy 21 points.

Chasing Roger Moran home each time, two fourth place finishes marked Tom New’s best result of the year. His co-driver Chris Merrick spun out of the opening qualifying runs – which with just 13 potential runners let in Peter Herbert for his first British run-off appearance in the Westfield-BDH – but recovered to finish sixth in the second stanza behind the flying Will Hall. And after two mid-field placings as he swapped run-off honours with sparring partner Eynon Price, Hall eased the absent Paul Haimes off the number ten spot on the championship table.

Championship standings after Craigantlet: 1 Scott Moran 205pts; 2 Martin Groves 184; 3 Trevor Willis 168; 4 Roger Moran 152; 5 Chris Merrick 134; 6 Paul Ranson 113; 7 Tom New 81; 8 Eynon Price 62; 9 Deryk Young 49; 10 Will Hall 47; etc.

WILLIS’S WISCOMBE WINNER

Trevor Willis stormed to his first British Hillclimb run-off win of the year, and the fifth of his career, at Wiscombe Park on Sunday. After dominating practice at the venue where he’d tied for the win with Martin Groves two years ago, the OMS-Powertec driver led home Scott and Roger Moran in the dry opening shoot-out. Groves ran fourth, but after coming to Wiscombe in the joint championship lead with defending champion Moran, he slipped to a two point series deficit.

The points battle up front remained largely unchanged as rain upset the form book during qualifying for the second run-off and the later running top contenders, including Willis, failed to make the cut. Having qualified before the rain started in earnest, Roger Moran took his third win of the year in streaming wet conditions, leapfrogging the non-qualifying Chris Merrick to go fourth on the points table. Eynon Price and John Bradburn ran second and third, each scoring their best ever British result.

Performance of the day came from Adam Steel who, on his first British run-off appearance, scored a point in the dry opening shoot-out driving the tiny ‘budget racing’ 1000cc Martlet-Suzuki built in less than four months by his co-driving father Tony. Later, Steel climbed within half a second of Adam Fleetwood’s 1100 class record to qualify equal second with Moran for the second stanza, before splashing through to sixth place in the run-off itself.

Championship positions after Wiscombe Park: 1 Scott Moran 186pts; 1 Martin Groves 184; 3 Trevor Willis 149; 4 Roger Moran 136; 5 Chris Merrick 129; 6 Paul Ranson 106; 7 Tom New 67; 8 Eynon Price 52; 9 Deryk Young 49; 10 Paul Haimes 44; etc.

TIGHT AT THE TOP

Indifferent weather produced some surprise results, particularly in Guernsey, when the British Hillclimb circus visited the Channel Islands in mid-July. But after two days of mixed fortunes for Championship rivals Scott Moran and Martin Groves, their duel couldn’t be closer as they now head for Wiscombe Park on equal points at the top of the table.
Jersey’s Bouley Bay rounds produced a Moran double, with Roger taking another win at the scene of his first ever victory in 1996 before failing to qualify for the second, rain-affected, shoot-out when it was Scott’s turn to win. Chris Merrick ran a consistent second each time ahead of Groves, while a great run in the DJ Firestorm for Bouley first-timer Wallace Menzies bagged the new car’s first British points with eighth place.

Two days later, at Le Val des Terres on Guernsey, the weather was even more unpredictable and top qualifier Chris Guille scored a brilliant first ever British win in the 2-litre OMS-Vauxhall, with even Scott Moran unable to challenge the Guernsey-born driver and Eynon Price and Will Hall proudly flying the 1600 flag in third and fourth. Groves, who had missed the opening cut after a failed run, made up for it later on to take the second run-off win from Trevor Willis and the on-form Guille, thus matching Roy Lane’s all-time best total of 90 British run-off wins.

Championship positions after Le Val des Terres: 1= Martin Groves and Scott Moran 177pts; 3 Trevor Willis 139; 4 Chris Merrick 123; 5 Roger Moran 118; 6 Paul Ranson 101; 7 Tom New 59; 8 Deryk Young 49; 9 Paul Haimes 41; 10 Eynon Price 40; etc.

DUEL IN THE SUN

Martin Groves took over the series lead from Scott Moran in another gripping British Hillclimb duel at a warm and sunny Harewood. After first Groves, then Moran had broken the class record in qualifying, Moran failed to score in the opening run-off when a traction control wheel sensor failed, leaving Groves to take the win by four tenths of a second from a hard charging Trevor Willis. After fitting a replacement sensor, Moran fought back in the second shoot-out with an FTD shot on the last run of the day, beating his season-long rival by just two hundredths, but Groves (pictured) is now back in charge of the Championship with a four point lead.
With a new class record in his Caterham-Hayabusa, Andrew Griffiths began a record-breaking trend which was taken up in all but one of the single-seater classes, Mark Hemingway, Will Hall and Paul Haimes all setting new class standards with Hall and Haimes making the run-off cut each time. Hall’s 1600cc bike engined Force outran Haimes’ 2-litre Dallara by two hundredths in the opening shoot-out, but a broken driveshaft stemmed his challenge in the second stanza.

Robert Capper set the pace among a strong Richard Egger/HSA contingent, finishing third in the 600cc racing class in his Nemesis. After a head gasket had blown on his Elise, Steve Filkin shared RE championship third place man Simon Andrews’ X-Power Cup MG TF, chasing his benefactor home behind a strong contingent of 2-litre ModProd British championship regulars. In the HSA ‘B’ Licence class, Eric Morrey followed up his Prescott win with another in the turbocharged Clan, keeping the Peugeot 205 of Emerson Kent and Chris Flavell at bay. MORAN AND GROVES ON RECORD FORM AGAIN

In a re-run of their duel at Loton Park’s season opener, Martin Groves and Scott Moran (pictured) each broke the hill record at Doune last weekend. Moran qualified top each time, ahead of Trevor Willis and Groves, but after an all-out charge by Groves had shaved five hundredths from his own record to beat his rival to the win in the opening run-off, Moran turned the tables later, a super-smooth shot carving another quarter-second off the new mark to win the second shoot-out.
Willis hurled the diminutive OMS-Powertec up the daunting, barrier-lined slopes for third place each time, drawing clear of Chris Merrick for third spot on the MCL Motorhomes series table. Merrick twice had to give best to his co-driver as Tom New rapidly dialled their Gould-Judd into the Scottish hill. With two strong fourth place run-off finishes, Roger Moran leapfrogged Paul Ranson by one point to take over fifth place in the series.

Chased hard by Will Hall, Scottish hillclimb champion Jonathan Rarity was one of several drivers on record-breaking form at Doune as he took the 1600 racing class win in his minimalist MH Ghost. Both drivers made the cut for the opening run-off but in the heat of battle during qualifying for the second shoot-out, both spun away a further chance for points at the notorious, blind brow East Brae!

A full report will follow in Speedscene.

Championship standings after Doune: 1 Scott Moran 137pts; 2 Martin Groves 132; 3 Trevor Willis 100; 4 Chris Merrick 92; 5 Roger Moran 80; 6 Paul Ranson 79; 7 Tom New 50; 8 Deryk Young 44; 9 Paul Haimes 24; 10 Jos Goodyear 21; etc.

TWO MORE FOR MORAN

With two straight run-off wins at Loton Park on Sunday, Scott Moran made it five wins in a row and increased his MCL Motorhomes British Championship lead over Martin Groves to five points. Groves chased hard for second place each time but despite lowering Adam Fleetwood’s long-standing class record during the qualifying runs, with British points at stake he couldn’t match the smooth, unrelenting pace of hill record holder Moran.
The latest of a growing number of competitors to install a paddle gearshift, Trevor Willis dialled in the new system to run third each time and level with Chris Merrick in third place on the series table. Another superb performance from Will Hall brought his tiny bike-engined Force, the only 1600cc car to make the run-off cut, into the points each time.

Backed up by his father Roger (pictured) in the supercharged DJ Firehawk, ‘occasional driver’ Todd Fleetwood mirrored his brother Adam’s Easter class win over 2-litre ace Paul Haimes and would also have made second cut, had he been registered for the championship. Despite warm, dry weather, the only other class record of the day fell at the hands of Midland Man of the Meeting Andrew Griffiths, who lowered his previous record in the Caterham-Hayabusa by half a second.

MORAN BACK ON TOP

Scott Moran powered into the lead of the MCL Motorhomes British Hillclimb Championship last weekend after taking both run-off wins at Shelsley Walsh. Under pressure from his top qualifying rival, Martin Groves spun out of the opening shoot-out and failed to score, but a marginally more cautious runner-up spot in the second run-off (‘I couldn’t afford to drop another round!’ confessed the three-times champion) left Moran with a three point series lead. An on-form Paul Ranson continued his climb up the championship table to fifth place, with second and third in the run-offs. After taking a front corner off the Gould-Judd during Saturday’s practice, Tom New (pictured) recovered brilliantly to finish fourth in the closing run-off, beating co-driver Chris Merrick for the first time.
The best weather of the year so far prompted several new class records, including the pre-71 racing car mark as Richard Jones and the Brabham-BDA shaved four hundredths of Peter Voigt’s 5-years-old Techcraft-Buick standard.

GROVES AND MORAN SHARE GURSTON HONOURS

Topping 130mph into the Hollow Bend sweeper and 150mph over the finish line, championship leader Martin Groves and rival Scott Moran swapped wins and second places at Sunday’s MCL Motorhomes British Hillclimb rounds at Gurston Down. With 24 rounds still to run, the battling duo are inching clear of the field and the series is looking increasingly like a two-horse race, but Chris Merrick and Trevor Willis are still fighting hard for third place. Merrick chased the two leaders home in the opening run-off only for Willis to get the upper hand in the second shoot-out, although the OMS-Powertec driver’s devastating pace on the early part of the hill was blunted each time by a lack of urge on the power-sapping blast over Burke’s Rise to the finish. Another good weekend for Paul Ranson saw Groves’ co-driver move into the championship top six behind the consistent Roger Moran.
Basking in the May sunshine, a good crowd also enjoyed entertaining class battles, the Rutland brothers disputing the1100cc racing class by hundredths before a similarly close1600cc tussle between the ever spectacular Eynon Price and Will Hall. Amid fine two-wheel action from the NHCA contingent, Glyn Poole repeated his April Prescott form as he twice lowered Gurston’s outright motorcycle record.

WET WEEKEND FOR BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP CHASERS

The weather did its best to disrupt a hectic two days for MCL Motorhomes British Hillclimb competitors travelling north for rounds at Barbon Manor and Harewood last weekend. After torrential rain shortly after the start of Barbon’s event on Saturday and a long delay to clear standing water, most of the top championship runners qualified, and then ran for points, in sunshine on a steadily drying track. With second runs abandoned due to time constraints, Championship leader Martin Groves set FTD in the single run-off, chased hard by Trevor Willis and an on-form Chris Merrick, who eased out defending champion Scott Moran by a hundredth. An early class run in the dry had paid off for Mike Fitzsimons. Just two weeks short of his 71st birthday, he made history in Tim Wilson’s OMS-Hayabusa as the oldest driver ever to qualify top for a British Hillclimb run-off – the single point he scored on the day’s final run being the icing on the cake!

More rain, though only showery by comparison with Barbon, turned the two run-offs at the following day’s Harewood event into something of a lottery on a slippery track. Groves' co-driver Paul Ranson made the most of the worsening conditions to take second place each time and bag the best combined result of his career while Roger Moran, also running early in the opening shoot-out, took his first win of the year. Running last, a superb shot from Groves demonstrated the former champion’s skill as he bagged third place on what was by then a treacherous track.

Outqualified by his father Roger (pictured), who topped the Q-sheets with a time that would remain as the best of the day, Scott Moran ran early to bag the second run-off win in similar conditions, making it a family clean sweep on the day. Once again, Groves secured third place despite running almost last. He still heads the championship table, but Scott Moran is closing the gap and after a consistently good weekend, Chris Merrick holds third place.

TONY MARSH

In what has been a sad week for motorsport, we are sorry to learn of the passing of Tony Marsh, at the age of 77. One of the true all-rounders, Tony’s motorsport career began in a 1952 Hagley trial and embraced everything from autotests through hillclimbing to Grand Prix racing. Winner of the British hillclimb championship an unrivalled six times, he also competed internationally alongside drivers such as Fangio and Moss. After a break from motorsport to concentrate on such varied pursuits as yachting, flying and ski-bobbing as a member of the British team, Tony returned to a successful hillclimbing and sprinting career in the late eighties which he pursued right up to this current season. Even with such a long and varied career behind him, he remained the ultimate enthusiast and will be sorely missed, nowhere more so that at his local hill, Gurston Down, at which he advised on the layout and where he rarely missed a meeting. The HSA would like to offer sympathy to his Tony’s wife Liza, to his sons, Simon, Peter and Paul, and to all whose lives were touched by this ever courteous, mild-mannered gentleman.

In-depth tributes to HSA members Tony Marsh and Allan Staniforth will follow in Speedscene 154

ALLAN STANIFORTH

The Association was saddened to hear of the passing of Allan Staniforth, on May 2nd. He was 84. One of the true ‘elder statesmen' of the sport, he began racing and writing about motor racing in the 1950s. For many years, his ‘day job’ was as a staff journalist on the Daily Mirror, a discipline that honed his style as perhaps the most readable of all motorsport technical authors. As a driver/constructor, the originator of the Terrapin range of ‘do it yourself’ hillclimb single-seaters influenced just about everyone who’s ever built or worked on their own cars, including top hillclimb car constructor David Gould. On his retirement from full-time journalism, Allan’s Terrapin Services consultancy proved invaluable to generations of racers. Allan was a regular competitor in his Megapin single-seater right up until his final weeks, and his death will leave a void in paddocks across the country, particularly his beloved Harewood, that will be difficult, if not impossible, to fill. The Association offers sincere condolences to Allan’s family, and to the countless enthusiasts whose motorsport careers have been influenced by his wise and unfailingly jovial guidance.
A full appreciation of Allan’s career will follow in a future issue of Speedscene

GROVES’ PRESCOTT DOUBLE

‘This is my best start to a season yet,’ said Martin Groves, after two straight wins at Prescott on Sunday raised his tally to three out of four in this year’s MCL Motorhomes British Hillclimb Championship. After trading hill records with him at Loton Park’s opening rounds a fortnight ago Groves’ main rival, defending champion Scott Moran, chased him home each time at Prescott. The Championship is already beginning to look like a two-horse race as the leading pair, split now by just two points, lead the third placed  Deryk Young by a 14 point margin. However there are still 30 rounds to run and, as last year’s runner-up Groves demonstrated after his disastrous start to the 2008 season, anything can happen.
After a two-week break, the British Hillclimb circus heads north for the most hectic weekend of the series. Two rounds at Cumbria’s fast and picturesque Barbon Manor course on May 9th are followed by a trip across the Pennines to Harewood, the longest hill in the Championship, for two more rounds the following day.

Full Prescott report in Speedscene 153.

Championship positions after rounds 3 & 4: 1 Martin Groves 40pts; 2 Scott Moran 38; 3 Deryk Young 24; 4 Chris Merrick 23; 5 Trevor Willis 22; 6 Jos Goodyear 21; etc.

Two historic cars stolen

Bruce Fullerton has had a March 78B and Lola T460 Atlantic, which are campaigned in the HSCC Championship, stolen from a garage last week.  He is trying to spread the word around the motor racing community to both get the cars back as well as avoiding someone buying car/spares which are stolen.

He is offering a £10,000 reward for info leading to their return as they are very prized cars which have been completely restored and are now used in competition.

HSA AT GURSTON DOWN

Multiple Midland Speed Champion Gary Thomas, driving his new Force-Suzuki, led a strong HSA contingent at Gurston Down on Saturday contesting round two of the Richard Egger Speed Championship on the opening day of the BARC Southwest Centre’s April double-header. After overcoming starter motor problems, Ralt-Vauxhall pairing John Burton and John Opie took second and third places in the racing class. Ed Bradshaw kept his bike powered Caterham clear of a 16-strong saloon and sportscar field as Neil Duncanson powered his Quattro through from fourth place to depose early runner-up Steven O’Leary’s Megablade.
Saturday’s FTD man James Blackmore in his diminutive OMS-Hayabusa came under fire the following day once the big V8s got into gear, defending Gurston Top Ten Champion Dave Gardner snatching top honours by just six hundredths from Pilbeam-DFZ co-driver John Forsyth after the duo had tied for the outright lead on the first runs. Although Sunday’s Gates Gurston Championship round wasn’t an HSA round, Association stalwart Fyrth Crosse had stayed on for the weekend and bagged the Historic class record in his ex.Mike Wilds Ensign from long-time holder Geoff Hunt as the local driver closed his Lotus 22 to within a hundredth of his old mark. With a time almost half a second inside Hunt’s record, Crosse also grabbed grab fourth place on the Gurston Championship table after this opening round.

A full report of both days’ motorsport will appear in Speedscene 153.

HILL RECORD DUEL IN OPENING CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND

Loton Park’s outright hill record fell twice in a superb MCL Motorhomes British Championship opener. Top exponents Martin Groves and Scott Moran resumed their 2008 title battle, Groves drawing first blood to take the opening run-off of the season from his rival as he set the first new hill standard. Then in the second shoot-out, Moran (pictured) fought to relieve his opponent of the record by a further four hundredths, the battling duo ending the day on equal points at the head of the series table. Jos Goodyear bounced back from a big off on Cedar Straight during Saturday’s practice session to trade third and fourth places each time with an on-form Deryk Young as they tied for a championship third place.
Former double champion Adam Fleetwood made his comeback in the ex.Wallace Menzies supercharged DJ Firehawk-Hayabusa, demolishing the 2-litre class record and qualifying the car each time, scraping into the points in the first run-off before skating straight on at Hall on the second. On a day of records unprecedented at a Loton Park season opener, Dave Wilson scored a popular 2-litre ModProd sportscar win with the ‘Pink Peril’ Caterham-Vauxhall, carving over a second off Ash Mason’s previous class mark.

Great Western Sprint - Castle Combe March 28th
To Castle Combe for the first round of the 2009 British Sprint Championship. Organised by the Bristol Motor Club this was the second running of the event held over 1 3/4 laps of the fast Wiltshire circuit.
Terry Holmes was in imperious form as he hurtled round Castle Combe in the blustery conditions; the Chichester Chippy in the blustery conditions in the blustery conditions, who last won a round of the Sprint Championship at Croft in 2004, just failed to grab a maximum when the gear linkage broke on his second run. Nick Algar was still acclimatising himself to the GR55 he acquired towards the end of 2008 qualifying third fastest but he hauled the Gould up into second spot whilst matching Holmes points tally. The Supercharged Hayabusa engined OMS of Steve Broughton was third and top of the highly competitive two litres.
Simon Bainbridge’s Audi TT Replica was once again the focus of attention in the paddock and on track. The twin-turbocharged four-wheel-drive beast was at home on the sweeps of Combe as the Yorkshireman rumbled up to seventh place. Peter Howgate had his customary good start to the season netting 4 points in the Rover K powered Ralt whilst class records, set in last year’s monsoon conditions, were falling on nearly every run.

The meeting also saw the first competitive outing for Tony Jarvis' and Martin Webb's new mount (pictured), a Formula Vauxhall Lotus (albeit with an Opel engine!).

BRITISH HILLCLIMB SEASON GETS INTO GEAR AT EASTER

Loton Park on Easter Monday sees the start of this year’s 34-round MSA British Hillclimb Championship. The series is sponsored for the sixth successive time by Mike Endean, this year through his MCL Motorhomes company, and the event will see all 2008’s top contenders in action including former double champion Graeme Wight Jr in the charismatic Predator V10, who takes on a competitive field of big single-seaters headed by reigning title-holder Scott Moran, former triple champ Martin Groves and rising star Trevor Willis.

With his Rover V6 powered Pilbeam appearing at Loton in the hands of its new owner, Cornishman Mike Tregoning, former 2-litre ace Tom New gets his first taste of V8 power alongside Chris Merrick. His successor to the number 10 spot in the Championship, Paul Haimes in the Dallara, heads a strong 2-litre class which also sees the return of another former champion, Adam Fleetwood. The former hill record-holder will partner father Roger in the ex.Wallace Menzies supercharged DJ Firehawk-Suzuki.

Expect more fireworks as Will Hall, now with a bigger Hayabusa in his Force, takes on rapid Welshman Eynon Price and the rest in a competitive 1600 class. Driving his awesome 700bhp Puma-Gould, Endean himself will join the new Mallock-BDG of Chris and Ashley Ward among the sports libres. A good entry of classic racers is headed by defending UK Changes Midland Hillclimb Champion Peter Cox’s beefy Chevron-Rover, while Paul Matty Classic champ Richard Jones in his Brabham-BDA will come under fire from Simon Durling’s Brabham-Buick and HSA stalwart Alan Goodwin’s Aldon AL3 sportsracer in the pre-‘72 class.

With practice on Easter Sunday, April 12, the competitive action gets under way the following day after a final practice session starting at 9.00am.

PALMER’S FIFTH HSA TITLE

In autumnal Curborough sunshine, John Palmer secured his fifth HSA Speed Championship title in style with a new class record at Curborough on Sunday. ‘Conditions were ideal this afternoon,’ said Palmer. ‘I was determined to break my old record that’s stood for over five years. ‘I’d beaten it before by two hundredths during a run-off, which didn’t count, but it’s good to have taken four hundredths off officially.’ His Westfield Zetec S left Curborough’s 1700 Roadgoing Specialist Production Car mark at 33.49 sec.

Rival Steve Filkin in his Elise, who Palmer had beaten to the Paul Matty Midland Sprint title only the previous weekend at Curborough, had to settle for second place in the Richard Egger Insurance backed HSA Championship. However long time series sponsor Alan Goodwin had a field day each weekend, with both cars powered by engines from his Aldon Automotive stable.

After pipping equally hard trying Mini driver Hugh Whitcombe to the class win on his second run, the spectacular Matt Clarke found another half second to win the coveted Alan Payne Memorial Trophy for victory in the 16-strong class winners’ run-off. FTD went to Jeremy Wilson after not only he but his closest challengers, Curborough expert Glyn Sketchley in his 1100 Megapin-Yamaha and Simon Marsh in the Gould-Opel V6 went a little agricultural on their second runs!

Full Championship results are now available elsewhere on the HSA website, and a full report of the meeting will appear in issue 151 of Speedscene.

V10 VICTORY

A delighted Graeme Wight Jr scored the first British Hillclimb Championship victory for his awesome V10 Predator on home turf at Doune, edging out Martin Groves by two hundredths of a second to win the opening run-off. Trailing smoke from a blown gearbox towards the end of the second shoot-out, he all but matched his earlier pace but had to settle for settle for second place after a superb closing effort by Groves. With traces of Wight’s gearbox oil still on the track on the final bend, the outgoing British champion took the win a mere hundredth of a second outside his outright hill record.

Despite clipping the notorious Doune barriers during the first run-off, Trevor Willis chased the leaders hard for third place each time in the OMS-Powertec. Another fine drive by Paul Haimes, who also had to contend with the oily track during the final run-off of the season, saw the 2-litre Dallara driver survive intense pressure from Wight Jr to hang on to his coveted tenth place on the Championship table by a single point from the Scot. But earlier, in a last round duel, Haimes’ bid to take the PowerMec Leaders Championship crown failed when a class win for Pilbeam-Millington sportscar driver Simon Fidoe secured the class-based title.

Final British Hillclimb Championship positions: 1 Scott Moran 265pts; 2 Martin Groves 247; 3 Trevor Willis 209; 4 Roger Moran 178; 5 Chris Merrick 170; 6 Jos Goodyear 133; 7 Paul Ranson 123; 8 Basil Pitt 96; 9 Deryk Young 76; 10 Paul Haimes 63; etc.

GROVES TAKES LOTON RECORD

Despite having already lost this year’s British Hillclimb Championship to Scott Moran, Martin Groves showed he’d lost none of his fighting spirit as he stormed to the double run-off win and FTD at Loton Park, resetting Moran’s hill record by three hundredths of a second on his final run with a 44.53. At the end of another typically all-out performance by the outgoing champion, he’d exceeded Moran’s total of wins this year and equalled the new champion’s number of 2008 records.

Scott didn’t get the chance to retaliate as his Gould was sidelined for the day after a steering rack ball-joint broke – at 120mph on Cedar Straight – during his father Roger’s first qualifying run of the day. Roger escaped unscathed after a happily minor off-course excursion, but with nothing more to prove this year they took the decision to withdraw the car.

With still an outside chance of catching Groves on the Championship table, Trevor Willis ran him close in the opening run-off before qualifying top for the second shoot-out, but then spun the OMS-Powertec out of the points at Fletchers. With two spectacular runs in the Predator V10, Graeme Wight Jr gave notice of his intention to return with a vengeance next year with third and second places respectively. The Scot is closing in to threaten Paul Haimes’ tenth place on the series table, and with Haimes also set to challenge fellow class winner Simon Fidoe in a PowerMec Leaders Championship showdown in the remaining round, there will still be plenty to play for at Doune’s Championship finale in a fortnight.

British Championship standings after Loton Park: 1 Scott Moran 265pts; 2 Martin Groves 228; 3 Trevor Willis 201; 4 Roger Moran 178; 5 Chris Merrick 170; 6 Jos Goodyear 133; etc.

WILLIS’S WINNER

Trevor Willis took the fourth British Hillclimb win of his career and clinched the Midlands based 2008 Avon/BMTR Top Ten Challenge title as he sped to FTD at Prescott on Sunday. With his British title already relinquished to Scott Moran at Gurston a fortnight earlier, Martin Groves won the opening Nicholson McLaren run-off from the howling Predator V10 of Graeme Wight Jr after Willis slipped to ninth after a mistake on the wet track and Moran failed even to qualify. But in the drier second run-off, Willis hit top form with the only sub 40sec run of the day to deny Moran the win.

With the non-appearance of closest rival Robert Kenrick, Peter Cox clinched the UK Changes Midland Hillclimb title in the big Chevron-Rover B42, giving a huge boost to the increasingly popular pre-86 single seater class on the Midland hills. With two rounds to go, at Loton Park and Doune, the PowerMec Leaders Hillclimb Championship is reaching a climax as a class win for Paul Haimes at Prescott put the 2-litre Dallara driver at the head of the series table, level with Simon Fidoe’s Pilbeam-Millington sportscar.

British Championship standings after Prescott: 1 Scott Moran 265pts; 2 Martin Groves 207; 3 Trevor Willis 194; 4 Roger Moran 178; 5 Chris Merrick 170; 6 Jos Goodyear 118; etc.

GREAT SCOTT!

After another weekend of misfortune for the Groves/Ranson team, Scott Moran finally secured his first British Hillclimb title at Gurston Down with six rounds in hand.

Early runner Paul Ranson slid wide over the Karousel rumble strip in the opening run-off, punctured a tyre with a piece of the Gould’s carbonfibre aero diffuser broken in the incident and spun the car at Ashes. Moran stammered up in fifth place with an electrical problem and with a new wheel and tyre in place, penultimate runner Martin Groves set the outright pace, salvaging a reprieve from what was by now his almost inevitable championship fate and handed the win when top qualifier Jos Goodyear slid the Pilbeam-Judd into the Ashes barrier.

But when Ranson stormed the Gould down into Hollow early in the second shoot-out, the car coasted to a halt with a broken third gear. With no time for repairs, Groves was unable to take his run. Goodyear made amends for his earlier mistake by taking the second British run-off win of his career and FTD in the process. But this fine achievement was a little overshadowed as with just a second place finish and Groves non-starting, a delighted Scott Moran had easily done enough to secure his first British Hillclimb title.

Scott’s victory also drew a parallel with Graham and Damon Hill in F1 – together with father Roger’s 1997 title, it marked the first father and son championship winning pairing in British hillclimbing.

Championship standings after Gurston Down: 1 Scott Moran, 262pts; 2 Martin Groves 189; 3 Trevor Willis 186; 4 Roger Moran 171; 5 Chris Merrick, 157; 6 Jos Goodyear, 114; etc.

The event also drew a healthy 33 cars and drivers vying for Richard Egger HSA Speed Championship points. With the entry split into two sections for awards purposes, Chris Jones headed the saloon and sports car section with an enterprising couple of runs in the Westfield – rather too enterprising second time up as he spun off into the Karousel infield in an attempt to get on terms with Simonn Braithwaite’s class record, although the win was secure from defending champion John Bradshaw, who took just one run in the Striker. That could have proved Bradshaw's undoing as Neil Duncanson, no stranger to the venue in the big Quattro, closed to within eight hundredths for a strong third place ahead of championship second place man Steve Filkin in the Elise. Wil Ker howled the Mini Turbo home in fifth, while a fine second run by Richard Colwill hauled the Impreza up through the field to complete the top six.

John Burton and John Opie ruled the racing section in their Steve Owen built Ralt-Vauxhall RT3, Fyrth Crosse finding a massive second run improvement in the historic Ensign to almost get on terms with Opie as he drew clear of Brian Ball’s tiny Force-Yamaha. A fine scrap between Tony Jarvis and Martin Webb in their shared Van Diemen ‘Pterodactyl’ RF 84 was only settled on aggregate in Jarvis’s favour, after both set identical second run times.

SETBACK FOR GROVES DESPITE SHELSLEY RECORD

The weather gods stepped in to move Scott Moran one step further towards a 2008 British Hillclimb title on the very last run of the day at Shelsley Walsh on Sunday.

After qualifying top with a new class record, Martin Groves went on to set yet another outright Shelsley record, at 22.58s, and win the morning run-off from Moran. He topped the Q-sheets in the afternoon, too, ahead of his rival. But after Moran had edged in front of Groves’ co-driver Paul Ranson, Groves took his final run just as rain started to fall at the top of the hill. Clocking 135mph on the approach, he was a quarter of a second up on Moran to the Esses before he hit the now slippery tarmac. He controlled the slide, but the time was gone and he had to settle for eighth place, leaving Ranson to score a season-best second place – just three hundredths of a second away from his first ever British run-off win.

Moran’s series lead is now 68 points and although it’s still mathematically possible for Groves to win a fourth successive British title, he will need a string of record-supported wins over the remaining eight rounds with Moran returning a series of mediocre scores, which seems unlikely given the championship leader’s current form.

            Full report in Speedscene 150.

Championship positions after Shelsley Walsh: 1 Scott Moran 247pts; 2 Martin Groves 179; 3 Trevor Willis 172; 4 Roger Moran 155; 5 Chris Merrick 144; 6 Jos Goodyear 104; etc.

FLYING SCOTT

Two straight run-off wins and a new hill record at Craigantlet boosted Scott Moran’s already healthy lead in the Nicholson McLaren British Hillclimb Championship. Rival Martin Groves’ Gould didn’t even turn a wheel in anger, a gearbox output shaft breaking as co-driver Paul Ranson brought the car to the line for its very first practice run on the high speed Belfast road course. With no spare available, the car was sidelined for the day and Groves could only watch from the sidelines as Moran stretched his series lead to 63 points.

Having equalled former champion Adam Fleetwood’s outright record at last year’s event, Scott carved a whole quarter of a second off the mark on the very last run of the day and with ten rounds of this year’s championship remaining, must now be a strong favourite for the 2008 title.

A relatively small group of British contenders made the trip across the Irish Sea and with qualification certain – provided they completed the course and got a time – several drivers scored their first ever British points. Among them was Andrew Platt who, with two fifth place finishes in his 2-litre Dallara, moved straight up to 14th place on the championship table. Tom New, however, desperate to gain ground on 2-litre rival Paul Haimes in his absence, crashed out of the opening run-off. Sustaining rear wing and gearbox damage, he failed to add to his score.

GOLDEN JUBILEE WISCOMBE

Wiscombe Park celebrated its 50th Anniversary year in style at July’s British Championship meeting. A cavalcade of hillclimb cars and drivers associated with the Devon hillclimb’s history took place at lunchtime, many of which took part in a special class to commemorate the event. Tony Freeman’s picture shows a small cross-section with British champions Chris Cramer, Roger Moran, Tony Marsh and his famous 4WD Marsh Special, together with Martin Groves and Roy Lane, who between them have taken no less than sixteen British titles.

Groves and Scott Moran took up the cudgels once again in their duel for the 2008 title, with Groves taking his tenth win of the year in the opening run-off to level with Moran’s total. But in the final shoot-out the ever present Trevor Willis, despite bouncing nudging the bank at Sawbench with his OMS-Powertec, split the battling duo as Moran took the win.

A NEW HILLCLIMB BOOK: FREIK – The Private Life of the Freikaiserwagen

Probably no-one under the age of 70 will remember seeing – and hearing – the Freikaiserwagen in action, but the story of one of the most famous and successful Shelsley Specials of all time, which broke Raymond Mays’ outright hill record in 1949, has at last been published. Written by co-constructor Hugh Dunsterville and his son Rob, it tells the complete story of the machine that was first conceived in the mid-1930s and, after a complete rebuild from surviving parts after the war, achieved almost legendary status before its life, and sadly that of its driver, Joe Fry ended at Blandford hillclimb in 1950. The 112 page book, packed with historic photographs, is available by post from the publisher: Midland Automobile Club (Est.1901 Ltd), Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb, Worcester, WR6 6RP at £15.00 inc p&p.

WET AND DRY FINISH AT HAREWOOD

On a weekend in which conditions alternated between torrential rain and bright sunshine, a limited choice of tyres confined British Hillclimb Championship leader Scott Moran to fifth place in the wet opening run-off at Harewood. Martin Groves continued his championship fightback to take the win, almost a second clear of the hot favourite in the conditions, Trevor Willis.  But when sunshine and a dry track greeted competitors in the afternoon shoot-out Moran approached hill record pace, storming to victory over Groves with the only sub-50sec run of the weekend and maintaining a healthy 40-point series lead over the defending champion.

Amid a strong contingent of Richard Egger HSA Championship contenders, John Palmer boosted his score with a good run for fourth place in the 2-litre ModProd class and Fyrth Crosse enjoyed his first visit to Harewood as he took on the bike-engined hordes in the 1600 racing class with the Ensign-BDA. The dedicated HSA class enjoyed the best weather towards the end of the meeting, Eric Morrey setting the top pace of the day in the Clan to take the win from Wil Ker (bouncing back after a transmission failure on the Mini turbo in practice) and battling Peugeot duo Chris Flavell and Emerson Kent.

PRESCOTT DOUBLE FOR WILLIS

Trevor Willis boosted his lead in the Avon/BMTR Challenge series with both run-off wins and a 37.71 FTD at Prescott last weekend. Behind the dominant OMS-Powertec driver, this UK Changes Midland Hillclimb Championship event staged a day-long battle between Chris Merrick and Deryk Young that began with a tie for second spot in the opening run-off, before moving up ahead of the absent Scott Moran to take second and third on the Championship table.

A strong turnout of Richard Egger HSA Speed contenders supported the event, both throughout the classes and in two dedicated classes for B Licence competitors. They figured strongly in the overall results with Gary Hill the outright pacemaker in his OMS-Yamaha, his 43.43 taking outright victory in the 1100cc single-seater class. John Burton and John Opie took on the pre-85 racing cars in their 2-litre Ralt-Vauxhall RT3, with Burton shadowing new Midland Championship leader Peter Cox’s massive Chevron-Rover for second in class, while Opie was eased out of third place by a last run charge from Barrie Lines’ similarly powered Argo JM8. Stuart Cairney took the top Paul Matty Classic Saloon class handicap award in the Imp while in the ultra-competitive 2-litre ModProd sports car class, Chris Jones returned in his Westfield-Vauxhall to take on regular pacemakers Tim Cross and Dave Wilson and finish third in a sixteen-strong class.

In the equally well supported HSA B Licence road car division, winner Eric Morrey and the Clan outran Championship leader Lyn Padfield’s Lotus Seven by just over half a second, Emerson Kent running a close third in his Peugeot 205 GTi.

MALCOLM EAVES

I am devastated to report that long standing member 1914 and past HSA committee member Malcolm Eaves was fatally injured in a motor accident last night, returning home from Prescott.

Malcolm regularly competed for 52 years and at the highest level. At Prescott on Saturday he spoke with his customary enthusiasm about how much he was relishing competing with his Lotus Elan twincam after a delayed start to his season.

The HSA Committee wish to extend their deepest condolences to Malcolm’s family and friends. Malcolm was the perfect example of those who make hill climbing the sport we love – his thoughtful and courteous presence brightening any paddock with his enthusiasm, understanding, charm, and quiet support. A true gentleman who we all will miss.

MORAN MASTERS DAMP DOUNE

Scott Moran set the outright pace at a miserably wet Doune hillclimb, scaling the daunting heights of the Carse of Cambus with a 41.14s FTD to win the second of the day’s two run-offs and extend his lead on the Nicholson McLaren British Hillclimb Championship table. Top challenger Martin Groves, who had denied Moran the win in the first run-off, had to settle for third place behind Trevor Willis, the OMS-Powertec driver recovering well from a barrier-swiping incident in the opening shoot-out that had left him with a puncture, a damaged wheel and an eleventh place finish out of the points. But the mistake proved costly for Willis, who lost his second place on the series table to Groves as the defending champion continued his long haul back into 2008 contention.

After a stunning practice run in the awesome Predator V10 on Saturday, just over half a second outside Groves’ 36.00s outright hill record, Graeme Wight Jr qualified in second place for the opening run-off. Then gearbox problems struck yet again and he finished only ninth before retiring the car. Former Scottish Hillclimb Champion Jonathan Rarity made a fine debut British run-off appearance in his Mark Hutcheson built Ghost-Hayabusa, bringing the diminutive machine, minus bodywork, well into the points each time.

MBE FOR PRIAULX

1995 British Hillclimb Champion and now triple FIA Touring Car Champion, Andy Priaulx, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in recognition of his outstanding motor racing career. ‘I was very surprised and honoured to receive an envelope with the royal logo on,’ said a delighted Priaulx, whose autobiography will be launched at at the Brands Hatch World Touring Car event on July 26-27. ‘I love my racing and I’m proud to carry the flags of both Guernsey and the UK on my car and overalls, so recognition of this sort is something really special.’

HOME RUN FOR MORAN WITH NEW LOTON RECORD

Scott Moran stretched his British Hillclimb Championship lead at his home hill, Loton Park, with a new outright course record. He carved almost half a second off Adam Fleetwood’s 2004 hill standard and pressurized Martin Groves, still struggling to get back on terms with his 2007 Championship rival, into a mistake during the opening run-off. Groves got two wheels on the grass as the Gould-NME slid sideways out of Keepers on the opening run-off and toured up for a non-scoring twelfth place. He recovered to win the second shoot-out from Moran by a scant hundredth of a second as the Championship leader exited Fallow with an uncharacteristic tailslide, but Scott’s score is now well into three figures with Trevor Willis hanging on to second place, albeit 35 points adrift, with two third place finishes at Loton. Groves is now equal third with Roger Moran, but effectively now has just one ‘life’ left out of the six discardable scores permitted in the 34-round series.

Another spectacular drive in the Pilbeam-Judd from Jos Goodyear netted a fine second FTD, with second place in the opening run-off. The amazing combination of Robert Kenrick and the tiny Force-Hayabusa got in amongst the big V8s yet again, qualifying with a new class record and running even quicker during the opening run-off – a feat also matched by 2-litre Dallara-Vauxhall driver Paul Haimes, though in a time slower than the 1600cc car!

A full report will follow in Speedscene.

Championship standings after round 12, Loton Park: 1 Scott Moran, 115pts; 2 Trevor Willis, 80; 3= Martin Groves and Roger Moran, 73; 5 Chris Merrick, 72; 6 Jos Goodyear, 54; etc

ANOTHER SHELSLEY RECORD TO GROVES

Martin Groves continued his fightback into British Championship contention with two run-off wins and another new Shelsley outright record, a tenth inside his October 2007 mark. Championship leader Scott Moran had to be content with the runner-up spot each time, but still enjoys a healthy 31-point series lead over Trevor Willis, whose OMS with its bike-based V8 lost out to the big hitters on Shelsley’s power slopes and ran seventh each time. Groves has now closed to within a point of Willis and with his tally of wins now three to Moran’s five, both with a hill record apiece, the stage is set for a re-run of their tremendous 2007duel for the crown.

Other run-off highlights included a fine performance from Groves’ co-driver Paul Ranson, who bagged third place each time, and another giant-killing act from Robert Kenrick, who twice qualified the tiny bike-powered 1600cc Force and outpaced the 2-litre Pilbeam and Dallara cars of Tom New and Paul Haimes in both the class runs and the run-offs.

The usual in-depth event report will follow in Speedscene.

Championship standings after round 10, Shelsley Walsh: 1 Scott Moran, 95pts; 2 Trevor Willis, 64; 3 Martin Groves, 63; 4 Roger Moran, 61; 5 Chris Merrick, 60; 6 Paul Ranson, 40; etc

WILLIS AND GROVES AT DRAMATIC BRITISH GURSTON

Only Trevor Willis was able to deny local hero Basil Pitt his first ever British victory at a wet opening Gurston Down British Championship run-off. After a superb shot by Pitt, it wasn’t until the final run that series second placeman Willis grabbed what was only his own third ever run-off win in the OMS-Powertec. Series leader Scott Moran gambled, and lost, on a choice of slick tyres on the rear of his Gould-NME. Third place was all he could salvage in conditions which, although improving, were still bad enough for the front runners to opt for a full wet setup.

Defending champion Martin Groves continued his run of misfortune with a high speed trip into the Karousel straw bales in qualifying after an optimistically late braking attempt in the wet. It looked game over for the day with a distinctly second-hand front corner, wing and nosebox, but after much frantic work in the paddock Groves and co-driver Ranson brought the rebuilt Gould-NME to the line for the afternoon’s qualifying runs in much improved conditions. This time Groves made no mistake, qualifying top and taking his second win of the year ahead of Moran on a virtually dry track with a time just over a second outside his own hill record.

Despite having, even by his high standards, his worst weekend of the year Moran still enjoys a substantial 21-point lead over Willis on the series table while Groves, in fifth place, still has a lot of work ahead of him to make up the deficit.

A full report will follow in Speedscene.

Championship standings after round 8, Gurston Down: 1 Scott Moran, 77pts; 2 Trevor Willis, 56; 3 Roger Moran, 53; 4 Chris Merrick, 48; 5 Martin Groves, 42; 6 Basil Pitt, 28; etc.

SCOTT STORMS AHEAD
At the end of a busy weekend for British Championship hillclimbers, Scott Moran (pictured - courtesy of www.hedward.com) left the North of England having stretched his Nicholson McLaren series lead to eighteen points over Trevor Willis. After a disastrous weekend at Prescott a fortnight earlier, Martin Groves powered back into contention with the opening run-off win ahead of Moran at Cumbria’s scenic Barbon Manor course on Saturday, later finding a fraction more to lead the second shoot-out with just Moran to run. But the series leader fought back to take the win on the final run of the day, breaking Adam Fleetwood’s 4-year-old hill record by a hundredth of a second. Rival Willis had a fraught opening run-off with sixth place, then driveshaft problems struck and he only just made the cut for the second stanza, finishing third with a spare flange which was already cracked, and which now had to last out the weekend.

Following the overnight trip across the Pennines to Harewood, Groves moved up the table to fourth place after shadowing Moran in the opening run-off, but disaster struck the defending champion once again in the second stanza when fuel feed problems left the Gould to stutter slowly away from line for no score. Moran stormed to a seemingly effortless fifth win (and third FTD) of the year ahead of a stunning drive by Jos Goodyear. After a half-spin in the opening shoot-out had consigned the Pilbeam-Judd driver to ninth, he really flew in the second stanza to chase home the leader. Shunning thoughts of any possible transmission weakness, Willis’s sixth place opener was followed by a back-to-form third, and he heads Roger Moran by a single point to retain his second place on the Championship table.

British Championship standings after Harewood: 1 Scott Moran, 60pts; 2 Trevor Willis, 42; 3 Roger Moran, 41; 4 Chris Merrick, 38; 5 Martin Groves, 32; 6 Deryk Young, 26; etc.

MORAN’S PRESCOTT DOUBLE
Scott Moran opened his 2008 Nicholson McLaren British Hillclimb account in style with two straight wins and FTD at Prescott in his Gould-NME GR61X. He goes to the Barbon/Harewood weekend double-header in a fortnight with 20 points in the bag and a four point lead over Trevor Willis, who drove brilliantly in the Powertec bike V8 engined OMS to finish fourth in the opening shoot-out before shadowing Moran in the final stanza.

Defending champion Martin Groves had a torrid weekend dogged by gearbox problems, and after qualifying behind rival Moran could only finish seventh in the opening pre-lunchtime points battle. In the afternoon, co-driver Paul Ranson damaged the suspension during his tyre warm-up and only a frantic wishbone change enabled Groves to bid for a place in the final line-up. But after another second place qualifier, his run-off shot ended in a spin at the Esses to leave his tally for the day at just four points.

WHO'S DOING WHAT IN 2008
Superclutch proprietors Tony and ShirletyTewson have acquired Pilbeam MP40-02 from Simon Osborne who fitted the car, which was originally built for Martyn Griffiths with Hart 420R power, with a Rover V8. ‘We’ve always wanted to run in the big single seater class,’ said Super Clutch MD Tewson, ‘and this is the ideal opportunity to do so. Making the run-off would be a bonus!’ The Tewsons’ ex.Durling/Wishart 1.6-litre MP62-BDA is for sale, with or without engine.

Tony Wiltshire has sold his all-conquering Ralt RT34 chassis to Terry Graves, who will run the car alongside his Pilbeam MP50 in southern hillclimbs. 2007 Gurston Top 10 Challenge champion Wiltshire is set to join the burgeoning ranks of Dallara F3 hillclimbers, having retained his successful self-developed 2-litre Peugeot to run in his new chassis.

Alastair Crawford is set to return to the hills this year in the ex.David Grace Simon Durling Gould GR37, now with 3.5-litre Judd CV power.

With Martin Groves undecided earlier this year as to whether he would be contesting a full season in 2008, his Gould GR55B is currently at the works undergoing aerodynamic mods so it seems likely that the triple champion will be defending his title once again. He will expect strong opposition from Scott Moran and possibly Graeme Wight Jr, who is set for a reappearance in the Predator, although whether the car will run the awesome Arrows V10 or a Judd KV is not certain at the moment. Elsewhere among the British Championship front runners, Karl Davison will be rejoining the lineup on a regular basis in the ex.Simon Durling Gould-NME which he drove at Shelsley last October, although it seems that contrary to previous plans, Tom New will reverting to his successful Pilbeam-Rover V6 for 2008. Having retired from the British Championship fray, Durling himself will campaign the ex.Brian Eccles Brabham-Buick in the Paul Matty Classic Challenge, which will be run for the first time on scratch this year.

Hillclimb Supersports (Clubmans to the regulars!) stalwarts Chris and Ashley Ward will be out in the sports libre class this year aboard the ex.Paul Haimes Mallock Mk20, with a new 2-litre BDG/Connaught unit, although they still have the Mk20X Clubmans spec car to run in the Supersports class until the new car's rebuild is completed. The ever-competitive Clubmans ranks will be swelled in 2008 by John Waggitt and Peter Needham, who will be running the ex. Colin Pook/Piers Thynne Mallock.

FIFTY YEARS OF MALLOCK CUSTOMER CARS
2008 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the first customer Mallock to be sold, which makes Mallock the longest running manufacturer, under the same ownership, of any race car constructor. A celebration weekend, including a special race for all types and variety of the marque, will be held at Silverstone on 23/24th August. After a scratch race on Saturday 23rd, Sunday’s main race at this 750MC meeting will be handicapped to allow the whole 50-year range of Mallocks to compete on equal terms. With a static display in the paddock, there will also be a parade of as many Mallocks as possible on Sunday morning. The Mallock Club co-ordinators would like to see as many sprint and hillclimb cars attend as possible and all Mallock owners, Club members or not, are welcome.

It is hoped to gather together the largest single gathering of Mallocks ever seen – surpassing even the turnout for Arthur’s 75th birthday celebration in 1993. As plans for the event progress, further details will be posted on the Mallock Club website: www.mallockclub.com

On-line entries at Gurston Down
From the start of the 2008 Season it will be possible to enter and pay for meetings at Gurston via the Internet.   Using this method is very much encouraged by the organisers and there is no extra charge to the competitor – they will absorb the bank fees. The reasons for doing this are to save a large volume of paper and cost of printing and postage.

MSA processes record numbers of competition licences
THE MOTOR SPORTS ASSOCIATION announced its best ever start to the licensing season in early January, when it had already processed more than 10,000 competition licences for 2008 - an increase of around 50% on the same time last year. Heavy investment in staff and hardware has accounted for the increase, while twice as many people as last year are applying on-line.

'We are getting licences to people well within the regulation 15 working days,' said MSA Licensing Manager Steve Redhead. 'But we would ask people to get their forms in as soon as possible and would recommend that people use the website to renew their licence. It's a far more straightforward process and is the fastest way to get your licence.' Visit www.msauk.org for full details.
